Taiwan Public TV faces NT$10 billion budget cut, producers petition lawmakers
The Legislative Yuan is considering a freeze and cut of more than NT$10 billion from the 115‑year budget of Taiwan's Public Television Service (PTS). Over 50 frontline producers from PTS, PTS Mini, and PTS Taiwanese Language Channel signed a petition urging lawmakers to pass the budget and prevent a reduction of roughly half of the NT$21 billion government grant that funds news, drama, documentaries, children’s and cultural programmes.
The producers say the budget freeze is tied to the stalled election of PTS’s eighth board of directors. Eight members of the board‑review committee have resigned, halting the board‑selection process, and lawmakers have linked the budget release to the completion of that election. KMT legislator Wang Hong‑wei accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of using emotional blackmail to force the release of public funds.
The petition lists flagship programmes such as “Fruit Ice Cream,” “Underclass Flower Road Rice,” “News Tiny,” and “Our Island,” emphasizing the public service role of PTS in providing reliable news, education, culture and drama for the nation.
