Taiwan security: Officials and analysts emphasize deterrence against regional threats

International media coverage and diplomatic analysis have highlighted the security challenges facing Taiwan. An Al Jazeera documentary titled ‘Taiwan’s Troubled Waters’ examined the risks of maritime blockades, energy security, and grey-zone threats. The program featured interviews with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung, who emphasized the importance of strengthening deterrence to maintain the status quo and ensure Beijing recognizes that ‘today is not a good time for military action.’

Complementing these perspectives, former British diplomat Charles Parton noted that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan carries immense risks for the Chinese leadership. Parton argued that a failed military attempt could lead to economic collapse and domestic instability for Xi Jinping. He further noted that any large-scale mobilization would serve as a clear warning sign, allowing the United States and other nations time to respond. Additionally, a blockade of the Taiwan Strait would disrupt vital global trade routes, potentially causing significant economic damage to Asia, including China itself.
