Taiwan seeks budget boost for drones and expedited U.S. arms deal

Taiwan is intensifying efforts to bolster its defense capabilities through both domestic production and international procurement. President Lai Ching-te has called on the Parliament to approve a 60 billion TWD (approximately 1.9 billion USD) package to fund the acquisition of locally manufactured drones and enhance industrial autonomy. This initiative aligns with Taiwan’s asymmetric warfare strategy to deter pressure from China.

To support this, the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has inaugurated new facilities for military drone research, testing, and production. Additionally, an aerospace and drone industrial park in Minxiong is expected to be operational by 2028.

Simultaneously, Taiwan is urging the United States to expedite a delayed 14 billion USD weapons package. Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s representative to the U.S., stated that the delivery of these arms is essential for maintaining peace through strength. Yui noted that while Taiwan was not a primary focus during recent high-level discussions between U.S. and Chinese leadership, the island remains committed to strengthening its deterrent capabilities.
