Taiwan seeks economic expansion and agricultural cooperation in Indonesia

Taiwanese companies are increasingly viewing Indonesia as a strategic target for business expansion due to its large market size within the ASEAN region. According to the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), the relatively small domestic market in Taiwan drives entrepreneurs to seek international opportunities, with Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines being primary considerations.

Beyond market scale, human resources play a critical role in this expansion. CIER researchers noted that Indonesian students studying in Taiwan can serve as a skilled workforce, trained by Taiwanese firms to manage operations in Indonesia and other regions. Potential areas for cooperation include energy, power grids, automotive components, and the food sector.

In a related development under Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy, Taiwan has offered to collaborate with Indonesia on developing smart agriculture pilot zones. Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-Lung, expressed interest in providing integrated technological solutions to help Indonesia strengthen food security and boost the export of processed food products. This initiative aims to create jobs and build industrial capacity through the application of advanced agricultural technology.
