Taiwan sends record delegation to Nagoya Asian Games
Taiwan is sending its largest delegation to date to the Nagoya Asian Games, consisting of 482 athletes competing across 34 sports. This marks the first major international event following the establishment of the Ministry of Sports, which oversees a total sports-related budget of 24.8 billion TWD.
While the overall budget has seen a significant increase, much of the growth is attributed to local government subsidies and talent cultivation rather than direct national team funding. The Ministry of Sports' own budget rose to approximately 5.19 billion TWD. Notably, the support staff for the delegation has increased by 32.5% compared to the Hangzhou Games, growing from 40 to 53 personnel. This expansion aims to provide more comprehensive support in areas such as medical care, nutrition, and sports science.
In the cycling category, Taiwan's representative team includes veteran Huang Ting-yin, a five-time Asian Games participant, alongside several specialists in track, road, and mountain biking disciplines. The team faces various challenges, including changes in competition formats and athlete recovery from injuries, as they aim to maintain competitive standing in the region.
