Taiwan Stock Market Rises as TSMC Falls, AI Supply Chain Leads Gains

The Taiwan weighted index closed at 43,386.41 points, up 266.66 points on the day, while the market showed mixed sector performance. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) slipped 2.27% to 2,370 points, marking the biggest single‑stock decline, whereas MediaTek Inc. surged 355 points to hit its daily limit. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) and other chip makers each fell more than 2%, but a group of AI‑related suppliers, including MediaTek and UMC, drove the broader semiconductor rally.

Foreign investors were net sellers, offloading 187.76 billion TWD, while domestic investment trusts bought a net 210.68 billion TWD, sustaining buying pressure. Analysts highlighted that the market’s near‑term direction will be shaped by upcoming U.S. data releases and Nvidia Corp.’s earnings report scheduled for August 26, which could influence the Taiwan AI supply‑chain outlook.

Overall, the market’s modest gain was underpinned by strong performance in AI‑related components, even as the heavyweight TSMC lagged behind.
