Taiwan Strait Tensions Intensify as China Patrols Threaten Shipping and Taiwan Showcases International Support

A recent CSIS report warns that China’s greatest strategic risk lies in the Taiwan Strait, a vital global trade corridor handling trillions of dollars of cargo each year. The analysis says that any Chinese use of force to block the strait would severely damage China’s own economy, which in 2024 routed about one‑third of its imports and one‑sixth of its exports through the passage. Japan, South Korea and the Philippines also depend heavily on the waterway.

Amid growing Chinese Coast Guard patrols around Taiwan‑controlled Kinmen islands, Taiwan’s government invited seven foreign lawmakers and two Taiwanese MPs aboard a Coast Guard patrol ship for a 90‑minute tour. The delegation, including legislators from Britain, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, India and New Zealand, was meant to highlight the pressure from China and draw international attention to the dispute. Chinese vessels continued routine forays in the area, but no direct confrontation occurred during the visit.
