Taiwan study finds paternal valproate use does not increase offspring health risks
A large-scale study conducted by researchers from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, the National Health Research Institutes, and National Taiwan University has found no significant link between paternal use of valproate before conception and increased risks of neurodevelopmental disorders or birth defects in offspring.
Analyzing health data from over 2.5 million children born in Taiwan over a 15-year period, the research team tracked outcomes for approximately 12 years. The study specifically examined whether fathers using valproate during the three months prior to conception—the critical period for sperm development—increased the likelihood of children developing autism, ADHD, tic disorders, intellectual disabilities, or congenital malformations.
To ensure accuracy, the researchers adjusted for variables such as child gender, birth weight, parental age, and maternal medical history. They also conducted a sibling comparison analysis involving 548 sets of siblings to account for shared genetic and environmental factors. The results showed no statistically significant correlation between paternal valproate use and the studied health risks.
The findings, published in the journal Neurology, provide important evidence for Asian populations. Experts advise that patients with epilepsy should not discontinue medication without medical supervision, as uncontrolled seizures pose their own health risks.
