Taiwan survey attributes cross-strait instability to CCP
A survey released by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) indicates that 52.3 per cent of respondents believe the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is responsible for undermining peace across the Taiwan Strait. This figure represents an increase from 47.4 per cent in a similar poll conducted in May.
MAC Deputy Minister and spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh attributed the shift in public opinion to increased Chinese coast guard patrols and the presence of research and maritime militia vessels east of Taiwan. The survey also noted a decrease in those who believe both sides share responsibility, which fell to 28.5 per cent from 33.3 per cent in May.
Additionally, officials highlighted concerns regarding Chinese transnational repression. Reported incidents include an assault on political commentator Akio Yaita in Taichung and a staged traffic accident involving comedian Huang Yi-hao, which prosecutors linked to efforts to intimidate individuals.
