Taiwan conducts Han Kuang military drills to test defense resilience

Taiwan is conducting its annual Han Kuang military exercises from August 5 to August 14, 2024, to test combat readiness and civil resilience against a potential invasion by China. The drills emphasize a ‘whole-of-society defense’ strategy, incorporating both military and civilian assets.

Key components of this year's exercises include simulations of presidential evacuations to ensure command continuity and the integration of drone technology for reconnaissance and attack. To test communications resilience, the government implemented 30-minute internet speed throttles in Taipei and six other localities, reducing mobile web traffic to 256 Kbps to simulate cyber sabotage or electronic warfare.

In a shift toward asymmetric warfare, Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration has equipped Anping-class patrol vessels with anti-ship missiles. President Lai Ching-te observed these installations and visited simulated hospital relocations to underground facilities. The drills also focus on decentralizing command and control, empowering battlefield officers to operate independently during potential blockades.
