Taiwan to attend Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Palau

Taiwan will attend the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum leaders' meeting in Palau, marking a shift from the previous year when the Solomon Islands blocked its participation. Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General Baron Waqa described Taiwan as a “very important development partner” that engages with forum members, despite opposition from China.

The forum's decision to issue an “open invitation” follows a period of diplomatic shifts in the region, where several nations have moved recognition from Taipei to Beijing. The meeting also highlights growing geostrategic tensions in the Pacific, underscored by recent missile activities. While the United States conducts regular tests near the Marshall Islands, a recent Chinese submarine-launched missile landed near Tuvalu and Tonga, prompting discussions regarding regional security and the unity of Pacific island nations.
