Taiwan tourism rises as Okinawa visitor numbers fall

Taiwan's Tourism Bureau reported that from January to June 2026 the island received 4.29 million visitors, a 2.3 % increase over the same period last year. By mid‑July the total reached about 4.55 million, with double‑digit growth from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, the United States and India, while arrivals from Hong Kong, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Japan and China declined.

In contrast, Okinawa Prefecture announced that June 2026 saw 805,700 inbound tourists, 4 % fewer than the same month a year earlier. The decline continued for a second month, attributed to two typhoons that caused flight cancellations.

Both authorities noted that broader international conditions, such as the Middle‑East conflict and rising fuel costs, are influencing travel patterns in the region.
