Taiwan traffic fatalities drop overall while elderly deaths rise

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications reported that from January to July, total traffic fatalities decreased by 12.3% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 1,569 deaths. While overall indicators such as motorcycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, and drunk driving fatalities have declined, elderly fatalities have seen a counter-trend increase of 5%, with 697 deaths recorded.

The increase in elderly fatalities is most prominent in Taoyuan, Taichung, and Hualien. Analysis shows that approximately 50% of these accidents involve motorcycles, with over 50% occurring at intersections or involving elderly pedestrians crossing roads.

Additionally, the Ministry noted a rise in drug-impaired driving fatalities. Following a change in statistical definitions in July to include more comprehensive data on drug-related involvement, authorities are monitoring the impact of these incidents. Officials have warned that the fourth quarter is a peak period for elderly accidents due to shorter daylight hours and temperature fluctuations, advising seniors to wear bright or reflective clothing when traveling during dawn or dusk.
