Taiwan upgrades maritime patrols amid increased Chinese military activity

Taiwan has upgraded its maritime patrol capabilities around the Pratas Islands in the South China Sea to counter increased activity from China. The Taiwan Coast Guard reported that its enforcement capacity has been “comprehensively upgraded,” highlighted by the completion of a wharf project in July and the stationing of a new 100-tonne-class patrol boat at the islands. Large patrol vessels are also being regularly deployed to the area to enhance deterrence and mobile response.

Simultaneously, Taiwan is facing increased military pressure from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Beyond the Taiwan Strait, the PLA has stepped up reconnaissance and surveillance operations in the airspace and waters east and southeast of the island. Data from Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense indicates frequent operations throughout September involving combat aircraft, support aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These drone operations are being used to collect battlefield intelligence on Taiwan’s force posture, including potential targets such as air bases in Hualien.
