Taiwan warns of increasing Chinese military control over surrounding airspace and seas

Taiwan's Ministry of Defense has issued an annual report warning that Beijing is increasingly tightening its control over the airspace and maritime zones surrounding the island. The report describes a regional security situation that “continues to escalate,” noting a “rising unpredictability” in Chinese decision-making following an “unprecedented” purge of senior military officials.

According to the report, China is actively incorporating military lessons from global conflicts into its own training and exercises. This includes studying the effectiveness of low-cost drone swarms used in the Ukraine-Russia war, as well as analyzing challenges faced by the United States in conflicts involving Iran and Israel. Specific areas of study include rapid ammunition consumption, the strain on air-defense interception systems, industrial mobilization requirements, and the perceived fragility of allied cooperation.

While China maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not renounced the use of force, the Taiwanese government rejects these sovereignty claims, asserting that the island's future should be decided by its people. The United States continues to supply weapons to Taiwan while maintaining a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding direct military intervention.
