Taiwan warns of rapid flu complications amid summer cases

A recent A‑type influenza infection in Chiayi, Taiwan, caused a boy’s condition to deteriorate and lead to death within three days, and a similar severe case was reported in Hong Kong. Dr. Li Bing‑ying of National Taiwan University Hospital said the greatest danger of flu is its potential to progress quickly to pneumonia, encephalitis, myocarditis and other serious complications, sometimes within hours.

Health officials stress that influenza is no longer confined to the winter season; summer outbreaks have become common in Taiwan as indoor activities, travel and camps increase transmission. All age groups are at risk, especially children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses. Early medical assessment and antiviral treatment within the “golden 48‑hour” window can reduce the chance of severe outcomes. Various oral, inhaled and injectable antivirals are available, but must be prescribed based on age, severity and individual health status.

The public is urged to treat flu symptoms—sudden high fever, body aches, headache, extreme fatigue, nausea or vomiting—as a medical emergency rather than a simple cold, and to seek professional care promptly to avoid rapid deterioration.
