Taiwan warns of risks from China's new cybersecurity and border rules

Taiwan has issued warnings regarding new cybersecurity, internet, and border-control regulations being introduced by Beijing. These measures, expected to take effect in October, follow the implementation of the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law and are part of a broader regulatory shift in China.

Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Deputy Minister Shen Yu-chung stated that the broad language in these regulations could grant authorities significant discretion, increasing legal and security risks for Taiwanese citizens traveling to or residing in China. There are concerns that the rules could empower lower-level officials to apply strict interpretations to align with political directives.

Furthermore, Taipei expressed concern that these regulations might facilitate transnational repression, allowing Beijing to assert authority beyond its borders. In response, Taiwan is considering legislation that would criminalize assisting in such activities.
