US job openings rise to 7.27 million in July

U.S. job openings rose slightly to 7.27 million in July, up from a revised 7.18 million in June, according to the Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). The increase was primarily driven by the manufacturing, healthcare, and state/local government sectors, while openings in the leisure and hospitality sectors hit their lowest level since 2021.

Despite the slight uptick in vacancies, the labor market is characterized by a ‘low fire, low hire’ environment. Layoffs fell to their lowest level since January, and the quit rate dipped to 1.9%, suggesting workers may be becoming more cautious about their employment prospects. Gross hiring also saw a decline, dropping to 5.1 million in July from 5.3 million in June.

The unemployment rate remains low at 4.1%. Economists note that while the market is not booming, it remains sturdy despite economic pressures such as high interest rates and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
