Taiwan and Hong Kong face heavy rain and typhoon threats

Heavy rainfall and unstable weather caused by a strong southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough have triggered widespread disruptions across Taiwan and Hong Kong.

In Taiwan, several southern cities, including Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Pingtung, announced the suspension of work and classes for August 23 to ensure public safety. Local authorities in Kaohsiung also implemented precautionary road closures on highways such as the Taiwan Provincial Highway 20 due to risks of landslides and poor visibility. Meteorologists are monitoring Typhoon Sandal, which is expected to intensify and potentially approach the Ryukyu Islands or move near northern Taiwan.

In Hong Kong, the Observatory reported cloudy skies with scattered showers and localized thunderstorms. A broad low-pressure trough is affecting the northern South China Sea and the Guangdong coast, bringing increased chances of thunderstorms and strong winds over the coming days.
