Taiwanese agricultural initiatives focus on organic farming and natural capital
Agricultural sustainability and the valuation of ecological services are being prioritized in Taiwan through organic farming initiatives and research into natural capital credits.
In Kinmen, Xu Yonghui has been recognized as one of Taiwan’s top 100 young farmers for his commitment to organic sorghum and wheat cultivation. Despite facing physical challenges from a previous farming accident, Xu has focused on eliminating chemical fertilizers and pesticides to support environmental sustainability. He has also pursued professional ESG and carbon management certification to align Kinmen’s agriculture with 2050 net-zero emission goals.
In Hualien, the county government is collaborating with the Chinese Society for Climate Change and Agricultural Development to explore the potential of biological credit methodologies. A research project is underway to scientifically measure the ecological value created by organic farming, such as soil health, water resource protection, and biodiversity. The goal is to transform these unquantified ecological benefits into measurable data that can support natural capital management and sustainable agricultural development.
