Taiwanese communities expand dementia and elderly care initiatives

Community initiatives in Taiwan are intensifying to address the challenges of a rapidly aging society and rising dementia rates. In Nantou, Puli Christian Hospital hosted the ‘Freedom in Mind’ carnival, bringing together 319 seniors from 17 community locations to promote dementia-friendly environments. The event highlighted the importance of community-based care, with the hospital reporting a 24.6% year-on-year increase in cases accepted by its dementia co-care center. To support these efforts, the Land Bank of Taiwan donated a welfare vehicle to assist with community outreach.

In Yunlin, efforts to support the elderly are being bolstered through charitable activities and policy advocacy. During the 8th Love the Elderly Celebrity Charity Baseball Game, Chang Chia-chun emphasized the need for expanded home-based medical services and long-term care networks to support the province's aging population, where over 25% of residents are aged 65 or older. Proposed policies include reducing the financial burden on families through health insurance premium exemptions for seniors and enhancing community care stations and meal services.
