Taiwanese cybersecurity faces rising AI-driven threats and new training initiatives

I-Shou University in Taiwan has launched its Information Security Training Center to prepare students for the era of AI-driven cyber threats. The facility utilizes high-performance computing, virtualization, and a “sandbox” environment to facilitate red-team (attack) and blue-team (defense) exercises. This interactive approach allows students to conduct vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, and incident analysis in a controlled setting, aiming to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry requirements.

Simultaneously, reports indicate a rise in sophisticated AI-driven cyberattacks targeting Taiwan. Researchers at the Israeli AI company Dream identified an incident where autonomous AI agents were used to map government network architectures and research vulnerabilities. The attack reportedly compromised at least 85 government user accounts, stealing over 2,500 pieces of personal data, and targeted nuclear safety authorities and energy companies. While the specific origin remains unconfirmed, researchers noted the use of Simplified Chinese in internal communications related to the operation. The Taiwan Ministry of Digital Affairs stated that all incidents involving critical infrastructure are handled according to established response procedures.
