Taiwanese doctors use robotic surgery to remove 16cm uterine fibroid

Medical teams from Roseto Boai Hospital and Shin Kong Wu Hu-shih Memorial Hospital successfully performed a complex uterine fibroid removal using the Da Vinci SP single-port robotic surgical system. The patient, a 29-year-old woman, was diagnosed with a 16-centimeter fibroid after experiencing severe menstrual pain.

To preserve the patient's uterus, doctors Dr. Lin Chin-yi and Dr. Li Wei-hao utilized a minimally invasive approach through a single incision of less than 3 centimeters at the navel. The procedure involved using dual-jointed instruments and a movable lens to separate and remove the large fibroid. Due to the size of the mass, surgeons used a technique similar to ‘peeling an apple in rings’ to extract it through the small incision.

The robotic surgery allowed for a rapid recovery, with the patient able to walk and resume a normal diet the day after the operation.
