Taiwanese firms expand GaN semiconductor production
The power semiconductor industry is undergoing a transformation as gallium nitride (GaN) gains prominence over traditional silicon. GaN is a wide-bandgap material that allows devices to operate at higher frequencies with lower energy losses, making it ideal for compact and efficient power conversion.
Taiwan is a central player in this shift. While Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has decided to progressively exit its business of manufacturing GaN wafers for third parties, other Taiwanese firms are moving to fill the gap. Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) are currently developing or expanding their GaN-related production capacities.
The increasing demand for GaN is driven by its application in high-power systems, most notably in the energy conversion and charging systems of electric vehicles. TSMC has noted that its GaN devices can achieve switching speeds up to ten times faster than silicon-based devices in certain applications.
