Taiwanese gymnasts lose World Championship spots due to association error

Taiwanese gymnasts Pan Tsai-chen and Li Chia-wei have lost their eligibility for the 2026 World Gymnastics Championships due to an administrative error by the Chinese Taipei Gymnastics Association. According to competition rules, the athletes had earned substitute spots for the uneven bars and floor exercise respectively through World Cup series rankings.

Reports indicate that after receiving notification from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) on August 20, the Association responded by declining the spots on the same day without consulting the athletes or their coaches. By the time the error was discovered, the slots had already been redistributed to athletes from other countries and could not be recovered.

The Association issued a statement taking responsibility, noting the decision was made by the Secretary-General under his authority, while the President would bear final responsibility. The Association has apologized to the athletes and coaches.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the All-Teachers' Union, which called on the National Sports Department to intervene. Critics argue that the lack of an independent grievance mechanism leaves young athletes vulnerable to centralized power within sports associations, suggesting that the government must ensure such administrative failures do not recur.
