Taiwanese hospitals expand dementia care and community support
Healthcare institutions in Taiwan are expanding specialized support systems for dementia patients and their caregivers.
Ministry of Health and Welfare Taoyuan Hospital has inaugurated ‘Yi Nuan Home,’ an integrated care ward specifically designed for elderly patients experiencing Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). The facility aims to address complex needs such as delusions, hallucinations, and agitation, while simultaneously managing chronic physical conditions like hypertension and diabetes. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary team to provide medical treatment, cognitive assessment, and family support to help caregivers manage transitions back to home care.
In Tainan, Shin Leu Hospital has partnered with the South Weather Center to conduct ‘Dementia-Friendly Organization and Angel Training’ courses. This initiative trains volunteers in communication skills and dementia awareness to assist patients and families within community spaces. Through a ‘social prescription’ model, the program encourages dementia patients to participate in community activities, fostering a supportive environment that promotes social engagement and reduces isolation.
