Taiwanese legislators face scrutiny over budget cuts and public fund usage

Political tensions in Taiwan have escalated following budget cuts proposed by KMT and TPP legislators. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Lin Chu-yin criticized these moves, stating that the removal of certain funds affects orders from vulnerable groups. She noted that purchasing gift boxes from such groups has been a long-standing administrative practice used by previous administrations to support social welfare.

Lin highlighted that several KMT legislators, including those running for local office, voted in favor of the cuts. She argued that these political maneuvers are sacrificing the interests of disadvantaged citizens.

In a related development regarding the use of public funds, the Legislative Yuan Secretary-General has announced that subsidies for legislative social gatherings will be suspended starting August 21. Additionally, scrutiny has increased regarding subsidies from the Taiwan Democracy Foundation. Specifically, pending audits have been noted for political figures' travel expenses to China and the United States, raising questions about the appropriate use of public money for international exchanges.
