Taiwanese local governments promote circular economy initiatives

Local governments in eastern Taiwan are implementing various initiatives to promote a circular economy and reduce waste through community and educational engagement.

In Hualien County, the government is targeting markets and night markets to reduce plastic use at the source. For the 2026 fiscal year, efforts are focused on Zhonghua Market in Fenglin Township and the Gangtian Temple Night Market. Strategies include promoting reusable containers, offering consumer incentives, and partnering with cleaning centers to facilitate the use of reusable tableware. Currently, 48 stalls at the Gangtian Temple Night Market have adopted reusable tableware, with 19 offering discounts to customers.

In Taitung County, the Environmental Protection Bureau has partnered with Yongan Elementary School in Luye Township to establish a “reused goods station.” This initiative encourages students to bring second-hand books, toys, and household items to school to be exchanged and reused. The project aims to integrate the principles of responsible consumption and resource reduction into environmental education, fostering sustainable habits in students from a young age.
