Taiwanese medical advancements support fertility preservation and ovarian health

Medical institutions in Taiwan are advancing reproductive technologies and preservation methods to assist patients facing infertility or cancer treatments.

At Chi Mei Hospital, a prospective study on autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections into the ovaries has shown promising preliminary results for women with low ovarian reserve. The study observed that the average number of retrieved eggs increased from 0.57 to 1.46, and the number of usable embryos rose from 0.46 to 0.80. The procedure involves injecting concentrated platelets to improve the ovarian microenvironment and stimulate remaining follicles.

Separately, Changhua Christian Hospital has established a cross-disciplinary referral mechanism to help young cancer patients preserve their fertility. By coordinating between surgical and reproductive teams, patients can undergo egg or embryo freezing before starting treatments like chemotherapy, which can impair reproductive function. To alleviate financial burdens, the Taiwan National Health Command provides subsidies for medical fertility preservation, offering up to 70,000 TWD per egg retrieval procedure for eligible patients with breast or blood cancers.
