Taiwanese technology firms expand industrial footprint and solar alliances

In Taiwan, the semiconductor and solar energy sectors are seeing significant strategic expansions. The TBC Photovoltaic Technology Alliance has been established by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) alongside seven major companies, including Giga Solar (碩禾電子材料), Yuan Jing, and Macrosys. The alliance focuses on Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TBC) technology, which aims to increase solar cell efficiency by moving metal electrodes to the rear to reduce light blockage.

Simultaneously, the AI boom is driving a surge in industrial real estate demand in Taichung. Major technology firms are aggressively expanding their presence in the region to capitalize on the proximity to Micron and TSMC facilities. Largan Precision (大立光) has emerged as a significant investor, spending over NT$8.8 billion to acquire seven plants across the Taichung Industrial Park and the Precision Machinery Technology Park. Other semiconductor-related companies, including Wanrun and Wibot Precision, have also invested heavily, contributing to a total regional investment exceeding NT$13 billion for over 30,000 ping of industrial land.
