Taiwan's MAC disputes Xi Jinping's WWII historical claims during US visit

During a visit to the United States, Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with President Donald Trump for the second time this year. During the discussions, Xi referenced World War II history, stating that the Chinese and American peoples fought side-by-side against fascist aggression and noted the historical friendship forged through shared struggle.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) responded to these remarks, accusing the Chinese Communist Party of spreading a distorted historical narrative. The MAC emphasized that the Republic of China (ROC) was the sovereign entity that served as a steadfast ally to the United States during World War II, noting that the People's Republic of China was not established until 1949.

The MAC further asserted that the ROC and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to one another, maintaining that this remains the objective reality of the Taiwan Strait status quo. The council criticized Beijing for attempting to link Taiwan issues to the broader U.S.-China strategic relationship and called for an end to military intimidation in favor of pragmatic dialogue with Taiwan's elected government.
