Taiwan's NCC Lacks Commissioners, Halting Bluetooth Device Import Approvals

The National Communications Commission (NCC) of Taiwan entered a commissioner‑less period on 1 August after the terms of its three remaining members expired on 31 July. With the Executive Yuan’s new nominee list still awaiting Legislative Yuan approval, the NCC cannot issue import approval certificates for regulated radio‑frequency equipment such as Bluetooth speakers, Wi‑Fi devices, and 4G/5G phones. As a result, shipments from Japan have been held up at customs because the required import‑approval letters cannot be processed.

To prevent further disruption, the Executive Yuan plans to adopt an internal authorization procedure that would allow unit heads to decide on cases that do not involve “committee‑reserved matters.” The cabinet aims to approve this measure by next week, enabling limited processing of certain imports while the full commission is reconstituted.
