Taiwan Coast Guard Confronts Chinese Vessel Near Pratas Islands

On a Friday morning, Taiwan's Coast Guard spotted the Chinese Coast Guard cutter 3501 northeast of the Pratas (Dongsha) Islands and warned it had entered restricted waters. The Chinese ship accelerated from five to nine knots and made a sharp turn, prompting the Taiwanese patrol to issue repeated radio warnings. Both vessels remained face‑to‑face for several hours, engaging in “intense verbal exchanges.”

Taiwan’s authorities said the maneuver was intended to create the false impression that Beijing has jurisdiction over the atoll’s waters, a claim that “undermines the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” The Pratas Islands, a Taiwanese‑controlled national park, sit in the South China Sea where about one‑third of global maritime traffic passes. This incident follows a similar encounter two weeks earlier involving the same Chinese cutter.
