Taiwo Awoniyi red card sparks debate among football pundits

Football pundits Roy Keane and Alan Shearer have questioned the straight red card issued to Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi during a 5-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion. The dismissal occurred after an aerial challenge where Awoniyi's elbow made contact with Brighton's Maxim de Cuyper.

Roy Keane described the decision as “harsh” but noted that Awoniyi’s actions provided the referee with an opportunity to send him off. Alan Shearer argued that contact with a player's face does not automatically constitute violent conduct, suggesting the elbow may have occurred naturally while competing for the ball. Shearer also questioned why the referee did not issue an immediate red card before the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

Awoniyi will serve a three-match suspension, missing upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United.
