Taiz facing famine and toxic shell allegations amid escalating conflict

Taiz governor Nabil Shamsan has declared that the city is experiencing famine due to a Houthi siege that has restricted access to food, water, and fuel. The blockade has caused the daily water supply to drop from 35,000 cubic meters to 5,000 liters, while gas shortages have forced the closure of many restaurants and vital facilities.

Yemeni military and local authorities have called for urgent investigations into reports that Houthi forces used shells suspected of containing prohibited toxic substances on the al-Aqroud and Kahlan fronts. These incidents reportedly caused civilians and resistance members to suffer from choking and loss of consciousness.

The healthcare system is at a breaking point. Authorities warn that 42 health facilities could cease operations within days due to critical shortages of oxygen, medicine, and fuel. Reports indicate that 120 health centers are completely non-functional, and 15 ambulances and 22 intensive care beds have been looted.

Human Rights Watch stated that the Houthi siege could constitute a war crime by using starvation as a method of warfare. Meanwhile, Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi denied the reports of a siege, claiming that humanitarian routes remain open.
