Tajikistan seeks 2.55 million tons of oil and fuel from Iran

Tajikistan is seeking to diversify its energy supplies by requesting 2.55 million tons of crude oil and petroleum products from Iran. This move aims to reduce the country's heavy reliance on Russia, which has historically provided the vast majority of its fuel.

The request, discussed in Tehran between Tajik Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim and Iranian official Farzaneh Sadegh, includes 2 million tons of crude oil, 300,000 tons of diesel, 150,000 tons of gasoline, and 100,000 tons of aviation fuel. Moving these quantities would require approximately 51,000 railway tank cars.

Tajikistan's push for alternative sources comes as Russian fuel supplies have become increasingly uncertain. In the first half of 2026, Russia accounted for over 70% of Tajikistan's petroleum product imports. Disruptions in Russian refining, partly due to domestic production issues and drone strikes on energy infrastructure, have heightened supply security concerns for Central Asian nations dependent on Moscow.
