Tajo water transfers exhaust two years of hydrological reserves

The Red del Tajo platform has warned that authorized water transfers to the Segura basin during the summer of 2026 have completely exhausted the hydrological reserves accumulated by the Tajo headwaters over the last two years. Spokesperson Miguel Ángel Sánchez stated that the system has lost two years of resilience, noting that the Entrepeñas and Buendía reservoirs are dropping rapidly.

According to the platform, the 2025-2026 period set a record for water transferred, totaling approximately 800 hectometres. The group also criticized current official flow rates as being insufficient, arguing that the ecological flows in Toledo and Talavera de la Reina should be closer to 30 m³/s rather than the current 13 m³/s. Additionally, the platform questioned the reliability of measurements provided by the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation (CHT), calling for a recalibration of their data.
