Japan PM Sanae Takaichi conducts first cabinet reshuffle

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has conducted her first cabinet reshuffle, a move aimed at ensuring policy continuity and consolidating her political position ahead of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election in 2027.

Key ministers were retained to maintain stability, including Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. Economic roles also saw continuity, with Ryosei Akazawa remaining as Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and Minoru Kiuchi continuing in his role regarding growth strategy.

The reshuffle introduced several new faces and marked a significant shift in coalition dynamics. Hiroshi Nakatsuka of the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) was appointed as Minister for Regulatory Reform, marking the first time a member of the coalition partner has entered the cabinet. Additionally, two lawmakers, Yoshihiro Seki and Kazuo Yana, were appointed to ministerial positions despite previous involvement in the LDP's political fund scandal.

Notable departures included Yoshimasa Hayashi, who was removed from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Takaichi stated the new lineup is a cabinet of ‘decision, challenge, and execution,’ designed to implement her promised policy shifts and economic growth strategies.
