Takashi Tachibana attack trial: Defendant admits to attempted murder
During the first trial at the Tokyo District Court, defendant Shion Miyanishi admitted to charges of attempted murder and violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law. The charges stem from a March 2025 incident in Chiyoda, Tokyo, where Miyanishi attacked Takashi Tachibana, leader of the NHK Party, with a machete during a street speech.
Prosecutors stated that Miyanishi acted on the belief that Tachibana's slanderous comments were responsible for the suicide of a former Hyogo prefectural assembly member. The defense countered by citing the defendant's social isolation and the influence of autism spectrum disorder on his ability to correct his thinking.
Tachibana, who is currently in detention on separate defamation charges, attended the proceedings through the victim participation system. He sustained head injuries during the attack that required approximately three weeks of medical treatment.
