Takashima initiatives promote reed boat building and regional tourism
In Takashima, Shiga Prefecture, a community-driven initiative is focusing on traditional craftsmanship and regional tourism. One resident has embarked on a project to construct a reed boat using local materials from Lake Biwa, inspired by the work of Jin Ishikawa. The project involves harvesting reeds from the Shin-asahi area to create a vessel that connects modern life with ancient human experiences.
Simultaneously, the Makino MegRia log house in Takashima has launched the ‘Makino MegRia’ excursion project. This initiative links Takashima with Obama and the Wakasa area in Fukui Prefecture, encouraging travelers to move between the lake and the sea. The project offers diverse activities including SUP (stand-up paddleboarding), fishing, and cultural tours of local temples. It also incorporates environmental education through ocean plastic upcycling programs in the Obama Yashiro area, aiming to provide a basecamp for families to experience both recreation and regional heritage.
