Takata airbag recalls affect over 125,000 vehicles in the Netherlands

More than 125,000 vehicles in the Netherlands are still operating with defective Takata airbags that pose a significant safety risk. Data from the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) indicates that 126,892 cars have not yet undergone the necessary free repairs, despite many of these recalls being active for over two years.

The defect involves the airbag gas generator, which can fail due to humidity and temperature fluctuations. In the event of a collision, the airbag may explode with excessive pressure, sending metal fragments through the vehicle's interior. This can cause serious injury or death.

BMW has the highest number of affected vehicles, with 63,487 cars—specifically 33,114 units of the 1-series and 3-series produced between 2006 and 2013—still awaiting repair. Other major brands with outstanding recalls include Volkswagen (21,641), Mercedes-Benz (15,662), Toyota (7,806), and Audi (5,273). Additionally, a driving ban has been in place since June 2025 for 1,720 Citroën C3 and DS3 models.

Owners are encouraged to check their license plates via the RDW or authorized dealers to confirm if their vehicle requires a free repair.
