Takeda has announced that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has approved ORZEYFUL (oveporexton) for the treatment of narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) in adults. As a first-in-class oral orexin receptor 2 (OX2R) agonist, it is the only medicine in Japan indicated to treat the disease holistically rather than focusing on individual symptoms.

Narcolepsy type 1 is a chronic, rare neurological disorder caused by orexin deficiency. Symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and disrupted nighttime sleep. The drug was discovered in Takeda’s laboratories in Japan, and the company is currently preparing for its launch to make the treatment available as quickly as possible.
