Takefusa Kubo faces prolonged goal drought at Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad midfielder Takefusa Kubo is facing a significant goal drought and a decline in playing time under manager Pellegrino Matarazzo. According to reports from Spanish outlets including Mundo Deportivo and AS, Kubo has not scored a goal at the club's home stadium, Anoeta, since February 2025 against Leganés, marking a 595-day period without a home goal.

Kubo has also struggled to find the net in official matches throughout 2026, with his last goal occurring in December 2025 during interim manager Jon Anategi's tenure. This scoring slump, combined with the emergence of competitive rivals such as Job Ocien and Gonzalo Gedes, has seen Kubo's role in the starting lineup diminish. He has recently been relegated to the bench for four consecutive official matches.

As Real Sociedad prepares to face Deportivo La Coruña, the team's attacking unit—including Mikel Oyarzabal and Gedes—is also noted for a lack of clinical finishing. Local media highlights that Kubo has missed “countless chances” during this period, leaving pressure on the Japanese international to reclaim his starting position and end his scoring drought.
