Takeshi Tomizawa criticizes credit card company response to suspected fraud

Takeshi Tomizawa, a member of the comedy duo Sandwichman, recently shared an experience on his radio program, ‘Sandwichman The Radio Show Saturday’, regarding a frustrating interaction with a credit card company. After receiving an email notification about suspicious overseas transactions, Tomizawa contacted the card issuer, but expressed anger over what he perceived as an indifferent and unhelpful response from the representative.

Tomizawa reported that instead of proactively investigating the usage or suggesting a card suspension, the representative asked clarifying questions about the email's origin and ultimately asked him, ‘What would you like to do?’. Tomizawa felt the response lacked the necessary urgency and support expected during a potential fraud incident.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion in Japan regarding the boundary between legitimate customer complaints and customer harassment (kasuhara). This conversation comes as new measures to prevent customer harassment are being implemented. While some observers sympathize with Tomizawa’s frustration, others suggest that customers should clearly state their desired actions, while noting that service representatives should proactively offer solutions to alleviate user anxiety.
