Asian Games 2026: Japan hosts 20th edition in Aichi-Nagoya

The 20th Asian Games are currently underway in the Aichi-Nagoya region of Japan, running from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The event features over 11,000 athletes from 45 countries competing in 43 sports. Notable additions to the program include BMX freestyle, mixed martial arts (MMA), and virtual taekwondo.

In recent competition, Japanese athlete Takumi Hojo secured the host nation's first gold medal by winning the men's individual triathlon in Gamagori with a time of 52 minutes and 56 seconds. This victory also qualifies him for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In swimming, 13-year-old Chinese sensation Yu Zidi has made headlines by winning gold in the women's 200m medley, setting a new Asian record with a time of 2:06.10.

Indonesia's contingent has begun its medal tally, currently holding five medals including one silver and four bronze. Notable performances include Sumaya's silver in women's singles teqball and Seraf Naro Siregar's bronze in wushu. The Indonesian government has pledged a bonus of Rp3 billion for every gold medal won at the Games.
