Takumi Kuriyama retires after 25-year career with Seibu Lions

Takumi Kuriyama, a veteran outfielder who spent his entire 25-year career with the Saitama Seibu Lions, officially retired following a final game against the Rakuten Eagles on August 30 at Belluna Dome. During his career, Kuriyama amassed 2,152 hits, a franchise record.

A retirement ceremony featured appearances by former teammates and baseball legends. Former Major Leaguer Hideo Nomo made a surprise appearance, jokingly requesting that Kuriyama “withdraw his retirement.” Other tributes came from former teammates such as Hiroyuki Nakajima and Yasuyuki Kataoka, who praised Kuriyama’s passion and his role in the team’s 2008 championship.

Coaching staff members, including Head Coach Yusuke Torigoe and Batting Coach Yoshiie Tachibana, reflected on Kuriyama’s professional evolution. They noted his intense competitive spirit, his dedication to practice—often training on holidays—and his meticulous preparation, which Torigoe noted served as an example for other players.
