Takuya Kai traded from Giants to Rakuten Eagles
Catcher Takuya Kai held a press conference following his announced trade from the Yomiuri Giants to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. Kai, who joined the Giants via free agency in the 2024 off-season on a five-year deal, will adopt jersey number 37, previously worn by Motohiro Shima.
Reports indicate the trade is an unusual arrangement in Japanese baseball, as the Giants will reportedly cover a portion of Kai's remaining salary to facilitate the move. The trade comes as the Giants look to solidify their catching depth following the strong performance of Takumi Oshiro, while Rakuten seeks an experienced veteran following reports that their primary catcher, Hikaru Ota, may exercise his free agency rights.
Kai, a former Olympic Best Nine selection and Japan Series MVP, expressed enthusiasm for the move, stating he is eager to return to the field and contribute to the team's success.
