Talca housing study reveals low thermal airtightness standards

A study conducted by the KIPUS Technological Center at the University of Talca has revealed significant gaps in the thermal efficiency of housing in the Talca province. After evaluating 80 homes, researchers found that only 20% met current regulatory standards for airtightness.

The assessment identified various points of air infiltration within the constructions. These leaks lead to heat loss during cold months, forcing residents to use more energy for heating. This issue is particularly critical in the Maule region, where wood-burning heating is a primary source of particulate matter emissions.

Márica Luisa del Campo, director of the KIPUS Center, noted that the findings provide recommendations for both construction companies and existing homeowners to improve thermal comfort. The research was part of a project funded by the Regional Innovation Fund for Competitiveness (FIC-R) to support the Atmospheric Decontamination Plan.
