Talca launches neurodiversity health center as Peru sees rise in inclusive swimming demand

The Municipality of Talca, together with the Maule Health Service and the University of Talca, opened the Centro Terapéutico y de Neurodivergencia Municipal in July 2026. The facility offers interdisciplinary care—including child psychiatry, psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, kinesiology, nursing and social work—for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions. It can handle more than 120 appointments daily and is expected to serve around 300 users each month, reducing wait times and expanding regional coverage.

In Peru, the growing number of autism diagnoses and other neurodevelopmental conditions has driven demand for inclusive swimming programs. The Ministry of Health reported that 91,884 people with autism were served in 2024, and the World Health Organization estimates that 1 % of children are on the autism spectrum. Organizations such as Swim World have trained all of their instructors, in partnership with the Centro Sensorio Motriz Tadeus, to provide adapted aquatic lessons that enhance physical, sensory and emotional development while improving safety and confidence for participants and peace of mind for families.
