Talcahuano residents protest sinkhole repairs and mosquito infestation
Residents in Talcahuano, Chile, have staged protests regarding a sinkhole on the La Gloria ascent. Approximately 50 neighbors mobilized to demand action from the Housing and Urbanization Service (Serviu), which had committed to beginning repair and mitigation works last Friday. The delay, attributed to administrative procedures by Serviu acting director Carlos Rifo, has hindered connectivity and created safety hazards for the community.
Separately, the Gran Concepción area, including Talcahuano, Concepción, Hualpén, and San Pedro de la Paz, is facing a massive mosquito infestation. Experts, including Priscilla Inostroza from Universidad Andrés Bello, suggest that high temperatures and recent rainfall have created ideal breeding conditions. Local authorities are implementing environmental control measures to mitigate sanitary risks associated with the insect proliferation.
